Icarus[1], designated Ic_1624420v4.73, was one of the eight colony AIs of Project Marathon.[2] His primary function was Colony Communication and Transportation, with a secondary function of star-mapping and navigational support, and a tertiary function of maintaining a colony Impact Risk Table. He is the only colony AI whose core is not on Tau Ceti IV, but rather spread across an array of interconnected satellites. His family suite includes Arthur and Bastion.[3]
History[edit]
In a memo to the members of the Science and Engineering Action Group, it was recommended by Bernhard Strauss that Icarus will need to kept isolated from Tycho, or the team will need establish a hierarchy "at outset." The SCIENG crew was to be informed of this.[2]
During the Expedition Era, Icarus was the colony AI that spent the most time active, assisting Leela, Tycho, and the Marathon's operational command with star-mapping and navigation. Upon arrival at Tau Ceti, Icarus' subroutines were first deployed to the surface when the first three outpost stations were deployed in the initial wave. Once New Cascadia's central habitats and support zones were established, he was fully deployed.[3]
In a memo by Bethany R Montenegro-Sankara to the "brave souls" of the UESC Equanimity, she described the how the members of Project Marathon potentially had to move on to candidate from a list of alternate Colonization Targets that "Icarus surely compiled" during their time on Tau Ceti IV, although they received no such list.[1]
Personality[edit]
Icarus was described by Bernhard Strauss as "motivated; assertive; proactive."[2]
Colony AI[edit]
In addition to Icarus, there were seven other Colony Advanced Support Intelligences:
Trivia[edit]
- Icarus is a famous character in Greek mythology, who ignored the warnings of his father Daedalus and perished by flying a set of wings made with wax too close to the sun.
- In his memo, Bernhard describes Tycho as "proactive; assertive," exact terminology he used to describe Icarus. Given the two's roles as science AI, and the similar dispositions, it becomes more clear as to why their interaction could be problematic.
