The Recon shell is one of many biomata models available to Runners. Recons specialize in gathering intel and are best suited for strategic and counteroffensive support roles.

Runner Shell Recon was originally made by the UESC, but was discontinued; Later, Recon had been adopted by freelance Runners for their scavenger operations.

The Blackbird personality series was developed by the UESC's Combat Science Labs. Active use of early model Recon shells was discontinued by the UESC after it was found that the shell's various information gathering systems had a likelihood of scrambling the mind housed within. Shell warfare was banned from military use by interplanetary treaty with the passage of the Consequence of Violence amendment in 2879[1] but Recon shells were quickly adopted by Runners, who had less concern for the risks and more concern with the potential benefits. While kit-bashing their shells' underlying systems, Runners discovered a deep-coded "command:follow" protocol that brought into question the free will of any UESC-aligned Runners and their ability to consider active orders.[2]
Recon models were utilized heavily during the corporate cold war on Tau Ceti IV in 2893.[3]
