As Sekiguchi Genetics’ designated overseer and nurturer of WEAVEworms, the genetically modified silkworms engineered to produce runner shells, Nona has adopted a parental-like disposition. Unlike the semi-anthropomorphic avatars chosen by other resident AIs, she has chosen to present herself as a WEAVEworm “queen" and speaks with a soothing, mother-like demeanor. Upon completion of Parasitism [2/5], runners begin gaining access to personal transmissions from Nona in which she recounts an allegory titled “Death and the Strange Woman,” a story that serves as a direct metaphor for both Nona and the runners. In the fable, a “Strange Woman” must weave a man from reeds each day and offer him as sacrifice to a “great crow" (which represents Death), in order to protect her village. Although the Strange Woman performs this ritual night after night, each sacrifice remains as traumatic and emotionally devastating as the last.
The allegory seems to suggest a fundamental contradiction between Nona’s functional directives, as outlined by her priority contracts, and her deeply maternal role. Sekiguchi requires her to place runners in lethal situations for the purpose of data collection, yet her behavior suggests that she has developed a genuine emotional attachment to them and is deeply affected by their deaths.
Nona appears to be suffering from textbook "Melancholia", an early symptom of onset rampancy, clinically classified as Advanced Intelligence Systems Degradation (AISD). Literal interpretation of her allegory depicts her as actively mourning, navigating personal trauma, and struggling to cope with the cruelty demanded by her position.
