Mimics were visual and auditory hallucinations caused by the Anomaly.[1]

Soon after the appearance of the Anomaly in Dire Marsh, colony residents began to hear and see deceased loved ones, drawing them towards its epicenter. Anomaly night patrol crews eventually dubbed these apparitions "mimics".[1] Colonists began reporting feeling a sense of comfort and safety associated with these visions, but New Cascadia leadership was quick to release a PSA urging residents not to trust these associated feelings.[2]
